DFH-2 AKM
Fourth Academy solid rocket engine. DFH series apogee kick motor. Out of Production. First flight 1984. First use in China of glass fiber wound cases, carbon/carbon nozzle throat insert material, contoured divergent nozzle.

AKA: Apogee Motor. Status: Out of Production. Date: 1975-1987. Number: 7 . Thrust: 43.46 kN (9,770 lbf). Gross mass: 580 kg (1,270 lb). Unfuelled mass: 70 kg (154 lb). Specific impulse: 288 s. Burn time: 40 s. Height: 1.49 m (4.89 ft). Diameter: 0.90 m (2.94 ft).

Motors developed for geosynchronous orbit insertion of DFH series satellites. These motors marked the first use in China of glass fiber wound cases, carbon/carbon nozzle throat insert material, contoured divergent nozzle, and non-destructive test of the motor grain. First used in DFH-2 satellite in 1984, followed by the DFH-2A. Impulse accuracy (3-sigma) of 0.7%. Total impulse of 1432 kN-s over 40 seconds. Nozzle diameter 556.8 mm. The motor did not fire in 2 of 7 launches, although the precise cause is not known.

Propellant Formulation: HTPB.

Country: China. Spacecraft: DFH-2. Propellants: Solid. Agency: Fourth Academy. Bibliography: 544.
