Edse, Rudolf
German expert in rocket fuels at Braunschweig during World War II. Worked in America at Wright Field, and then Ohio State University after the war.

Born: 1913-12-14. Died: 1998-01-08.

Rudolph Edse's parents ran a pastry shop in Hamburg. From 1931 to 1937 he studied Physical Chemistry at the University of Hamburg. In 1936 he cycled to the Olympic Games in Berlin. He aspired to an academic career, but this was prevented by the outbreak of war. Gerhard Damkoehler brought him in 1939 as a research chemist at the aeronautical research institute in Braunschweig , where he worked on jet and rocket propulsion. In November 1939 he married his cousin Ilsedore Maria Edseand received his doctorate. From 1943 to 1945 he was Head of the Department of Chemistry at Braunschweig. He was brought to the United States in September 1945 as part of Operation Paperclip. His family followed a year kater. From 1947 to 1950 he worked as a research associate at Ohio State University on rocket fuels. From 1951 he worked there at the Department of Aerospace Research and initially studied exhaust velocities. He worked here until 1996 as a lecturer.
