Japanese ISAS sounding rocket. Single stage ionospheric sounding rocket used for research from Japan's Antarctic base.

The S-210 (S for single stage; 210 for 210 mm diameter) rocket was designed for low-cost observations of the ionosphere above 100 km altitude. The S-160 sub-scale version of the rocket proved the design concepts. The first two launches of the full sized versions in 1966-1967, .PT-210-1 and -2, were failures, with the motor case burning through. After redesign of the case and improved quality control, S-210-1 and -2 were successfully launched in August 1969. Following further successful tests in Japan in 1970-1971, the rocket was cleared for intensive use at the Japanese Antarctic base at Syowa in 1972-1978.

The rocket motor used butadiene propellant, which has good low temperature properties suited for use at the South Pole. The tapered circular grain provided 17 seconds of thrust. The combustion chamber was of chrome molybdenum steel, protected by a phenol resin-quartz glass fiber ablative covering. Stabilization was by a spin motor that produced 2 revolutions-per-second.
