RKK Energia began medical screening of candidates for this group of cosmonauts in the summer of 2005 at the IMBP in Moscow. The GMK medical board passed Serova on 26 February 2006 and Tikhonov on 8 August 2006. This was a new generation of engineer-cosmonauts, just out of graduate school.
