Aimbetov was a Major in the Kazakh Air Force, group commander of MiG-squadron 21751 in Taldy-Kurgan, when selected as one of two Kazakhs to fly in space as part of an agreement between the Russian and Kazakh governments. Aimbetov graduated in 1993 from the Pavel Kutakhov Higher Military Aviation School in Armavir.
