Briggs, Geoffrey A American scientist. Led Mars imaging teams for JPL Mariner and Viking missions 1969-1977. Deputy Director and Director, NASA HQ Solar System Exploration Division 1977-1990. Scientific Director, Ames Center for Mars Exploration, 1992-1997.

Geoffrey A. Briggs was director of the Solar System Exploration Division at NASA Headquarters throughout the 1980s. Educated in high energy physics at the University of Virginia, Briggs became involved in the space program in 1967, working at Bellcomm, Inc., and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he was principal investigator on the Mariner Mars 1971 imaging team. He also worked in the Viking Orbiter imaging team and was leader of the Voyager imaging team.Geoffrey Briggs received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Durham, England. He worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California as a science investigator on the Mariner 9, Viking Orbiter and Voyager imaging teams. From 1977 to 1990, he worked at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC, first as deputy director and then as director of NASA's Solar System Exploration Division. This period included the launch of the Pioneer Venus missions, the Pioneer 11 encounter with Saturn, the Voyager launch and encounters with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, the start of the Mars Observer and Cassini missions and the launch of Galileo, Ulysses and Magellan. From 1992 he was the scientific director of the NASA Ames' Center for Mars Exploration.
