Stephen Lee Cunningham American Payload Specialist Astronaut. Born 10 September 1945.

Personal: Male. Born in Renton, Washington, USA. Civilian Bachelor of science in physics from the University of Denver, 1967. Master of science in physics and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, 1969 and 1971 respectively. Worked for CalTech from 1975 to 1977 and then for Hughes Aircraft.

Astronaut Career

Astronaut Group: Payload Specialist. Inactive Entered space service: 5 July 1984. Left space service: 28 January 1986.

Returned to Hughes Aircraft.


Cunningham Stephen Chronology

1986 November - STS-61-L (cancelled). Planned shuttle mission for deployment of commercial communications satellites. Would have launched the first American journalist in space from Launch Complex 39B. Cancelled after Challenger disaster.
