Space isn't remote at all. It's only an hour's drive away if your car could go straight upwards.

Dwight

Edward Joseph Dwight Jr American Pilot Astronaut candidate. Born 9 September 1933.

Personal: Male. Born in Kansas City , Kansas, USA.

Astronaut Career

Astronaut Group: NASA Group 3 - 1963 (Candidate).

President Kennedy pushed for NASA to appoint a black astronaut, but NASA said that none of the African-American military pilots had a test pilot qualification. Bobby Kennedy arranged for USAF Captain Edward Dwight to be enrolled in the USAF Test Pilot school in 1962. He graduated, and at age 28 was a B-57 bomber pilot with 2,000 hours flying time and a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering. However NASA still did not find him as well qualified as other candidates for the third astronaut group, and he was not among the 32 chosen for final physical and mental tests. After Kennedy's assassination, the political pressure ceased and NASA made no effort to recruit African-American astronauts until the 1978 selection for the shuttle program. Dwight resigned from the Air Force in 1966 after thirteen years of service and became a successful sculpter.
