Joined an artillery regiment in August 1941, serving with the PVO air defence forces at Stalingrad, then on the Southwest front. Received advanced political training at the Lenin Military-Political Academy in 1948-1952. Held positions of increasing responsibility in the political apparatus of the armed forces, capped by his GUKOS appointement in 1974. Retired from the military in 1981.
