
Sir Harrie S.W. Massey was Quain Professor of Physics at University College, London, and chairman of the British National Space Research Committee in the early 1960s. He was the leader of a team of British scientists responsible for the selection of the experiments and instruments for the S.51 satellite project, an Anglo-American cooperative effort begun in 1959 to launch individual instruments into space for scientific purposes.
