Ronald Dean Townsend American Payload Specialist Astronaut. Born 19 June 1948.

Personal: Male. Born in Concordia, Kansas, USA. US Air Force Bachelor of arts and master of science in mathematics from Kansas State University, 1970 and 1972 respectively. Ph.D. in meteorology (atmospheric dynamics) from the University of Wisconsin, 1980. US Air Force

Astronaut Career

Astronaut Group: Payload Specialist. Inactive Entered space service: November 1985. Left space service: 1986. Unsuccessful application for NASA astronaut group 14. Selected in 1985 for WOSE program (USAF Air Weather Service Officer).

Stationed at the Pentagon and then Langley AFB, Virginia. Retired from the USAF in 1995 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Later President and Chief Executive Officer, Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and Director, ORISE.
