Spent his entire career in the RVSN Strategic Rocket Forces, becoming First Deputy Commander of a Missile Army before being sent to the General Staff Academy. Thereafter commander at Baikonur, where he supervised flight test of a new generation of launch vehicles (Zenit-2, Energia, and Buran).
