Development of systems for air defense and the control of outer space. DS-type control-test complexes were developed by V M Kovtunenko at OKB-586. Flight tests of the DS-P1 in 1962 demonstrated the practical use of this method. In 1964 the DS-P1-Yu operational system started flight tests. It was accepted into the military in 1968 as part of the 'Raduga' complex. Used until 1978, a total of 78 launches with Kosmos-2 launch vehicles. Colonel Ye S Shchapov was in charge of Raduga development for the military. Typical orbit: 256 x 728 km, 69.4 deg inclinaton. Mass: 330 kg (720 lb).
