Energia could place observation platforms of 18 to 21 metric tons in geostationary orbit. These platforms would provide continuous multispectral monitoring of the surface in the visual, ultraviolet, and infrared bands. Any environmental changes could be noted and radio and laser links used to command low orbit satellites to take a detailed look at the problem.

Typical orbit: Geosynchronous orbit. Mass: 18,000 kg (39,000 lb). Associated Launch Vehicle: Energia.
