Thiokol solid rocket engine. 27 kN. Apogee motor used on CTS, GMS, BS, GPS, GOES satellites. In Production. Isp=288s.

Apogee motor was developed for the Canadian Communications Research Centre's Communications Technology Satellite, and an offloaded version was qualified and flown successfully. With various propellant loadings and explosive transfer assemblies, it was used for the Broadcast Satellite Experiment, the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite, the Navigation Technology Satellite No. 2, the Global Positioning System Satellites, the P78-1 Satellite, and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite. Charge: 338 kg pf AP/HTPB/Al propellant in a 6Al-4V titanium case with a graphite/carbon phenolic nozzle. Propellant mass fraction 0.924. (propellant mass can be reduced up to 25%). Total impulse 96,986 kgf-s.

Application: CTS, GMS, BS, GPS, GOES.

Associated Propellants
  • Solid Solid propellants have the fuel and oxidiser embedded in a rubbery matrix. They were developed to a high degree of perfection in the United States in the 1950's and 1960's. In Russia, development was slower, due to a lack of technical leadership in the area and rail handling problems. Solid propellants have the fuel and oxidiser embedded in a rubbery matrix.
