Space Gnat is designed to provide a minimum acceleration, extended burn delta-V impulse. With a low average thrust and a unique off-center nozzle design, the motor can be utilized in many nonstandard geometric configurations for small payload replacement or spin-up applications. As with most STAR motors, the STAR 5A has been demonstrated to allow a 20 percent offload capability. The STAR 5A is typical of Elkton DLV division's quick response to small motor needs as it was designed, qualified, and delivered in 10 months. Total impulse 584 kgf-s. Propellant mass fraction 0.493.

Engine Model: Star 5C. Manufacturer Name: TE-M-344-16. Other Designations: 2.67-KS-459. Designer: Thiokol. Propellants: Solid. Thrust(vac): 2.039 kN (458 lbf). Burn time: 2.67 sec. Chambers: 1. Country: USA. Status: Out of Production.

Titan Retro is designed to separate the second stage from the upper stage on the Titan IV launch vehicle. The motor incorporates a reduced aluminum content (2 percent aluminum) propellant to minimize spacecraft contamination and delivers nearly the same total impulse as the STAR 5C (16 percent aluminum) motor. The case, nozzle, and igniter remain unchanged from the STAR 5C, and these same components are qualified for the more severe Titan IV environments. The motor has been successfully static tested from -4 to +177 deg F during qualification.

Engine Model: Star 5C/CB. Manufacturer Name: TE-M-344-15. Government Designation: Titan Retro. Other Designations: 2.80-KS-439. Designer: Thiokol. Gross Mass: 4.46 kg (9.83 lb). Empty Mass: 2.40 kg (5.20 lb). Propellants: Solid. Thrust(vac): 1.951 kN (439 lbf). Isp: 266 sec. Burn time: 2.80 sec. Diameter: 0.12 m (0.40 ft). Chambers: 1. Country: USA. Status: In Production. Flown: 915.

Titan Retro is designed to separate the second stage from the trans stage on the Titan II missile and Titan launch vehicle. The motor has been adapted for other uses. As the TE-M-488 for McDonnell Douglas, the operating temperature was lowered to -30 deg F, the skirts on both closures removed, and mounting lugs welded to the case. Mounting ears and studs on the head-end closure were provided for a Sandia National Laboratories program. Total impulse 567 kgf-s. Propellant mass fraction 0.462.

Engine Model: Star 5CB. Manufacturer Name: TE-M-344-16. Designer: Thiokol. Gross Mass: 4.50 kg (9.90 lb). Empty Mass: 2.40 kg (5.20 lb). Propellants: Solid. Thrust(vac): 2.000 kN (450 lbf). Burn time: 2.77 sec. Diameter: 0.12 m (0.40 ft). Length: 0.34 m (1.12 ft). Chambers: 1. Country: USA. Status: In Production.

Reduced Al HTPB propellant (2.1 kg) minimizes contamination when Used in a Titan 4 stage separation motor.. Diameter: 121 mm. Length: 341 mm. Mass: 4.5 kg. Itotal: 5.5 kNs. Burn Time: 2.77 sec.
