Lockheed UGM-96 Trident

The UGM-96 Trident C-4 is a long-range derivative of the UGM-73 Poseidon C-3 SLBM (Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile), and is one of the two types of SLBM currently in service with the U.S. Navy.

In 1971, the U.S. Navy started the ULMS (Undersea Long-Range Missile System) program to develop an SLBM with significantly longer range than the UGM-73 Poseidon. Prime contractor Lockheed proposed a two-phase program. Initially, an advanced derivative of Poseidon (tentatively called EXPO - Extended-Range Poseidon) would be developed, which was to have the same external dimensions as Poseidon to make use of existing submarines. Later on, the ultimate long-range SLBM would be developed as a larger missile, together with a new class of ballistic missile submarines. The EXPO concept evolved into the Trident I C-4, while the new enlarged design eventually became the UGM-133 Trident II D-5.

In 1974, Lockheed was awarded a development contract for the UGM-96A Trident I C-4 missile. The adoption of the SLBM designator C-4 clearly indicated that Trident I was regarded as an evolutional step from Poseidon C-3, compatible with the latter's launch platforms. To achieve the desired range of 7400 km (4000 nm) (compared to 5280 km (2850 nm) for Poseidon), several new technologies were used. One of the most important was a completely new propulsion system. The rocket motors use a new higher-energy propellant, light-weight Kevlar casings, and make more efficient use of the available fuel by completely buring out the motor instead of neutralizing the thrust for trajectory control. Another innovative feature of the UGM-96A is an extendable "aero-spike", which is extended from the nose after launch. This spike creates a shock cone, reducing frontal drag by about 50%. The aero-spike allowed the use of a significantly blunter missile nose, which not only houses the warhead section, but also a third rocket stage. The first flight of an UGM-96A occurred in January 1977, and the first launch from a submarine - USS Francis Scott Key (SSBN-657) - succeeded in July 1979. In October that year, SSBN-657 became the first submarine to go on patrol with the Trident I C-4.

The UGM-96A SLBM's warhead section normally consists of eight MK 4 independent reentry vehicles, each fitted with a 100 kT W-76 thermonuclear warhead. Up to 14 MIRVs can be loaded, of course reducing the range of the missile. The Trident I is also equipped with a new MK 5 stellar/interial navigation system, which increases accuracy to about 380 m (1250 ft) CEP.

The Trident I C-4 not only replaced all UGM-73 Poseidon missiles, but was also deployed on the first Ohio class (SSBN-726) submarines. These SSBNs are designed to carry 24 of the larger UGM-133 Trident II D-5 missiles, but the first eight were equipped with Trident I because the D-5 was not yet available. The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) II limits the number of Trident submarines of the U.S. Navy to 18. All 18 Ohio class boats have been completed by 1997, and therefore all earlier SSBNs have been decommissioned. Between 1977 and 1986, Lockheed built about 600 UGM-96A missiles, for a peak deployment level of 384.

Current plans of the U.S. Navy call for a refit of the four newer Trident I C-4 SSBNs with the Trident II D-5, and the first D-5 conversion is nearing completion in early 2002, with the next one to be started soon. The four oldest Trident I SSBNs will be retired as ballistic missile submarines, but at least two of them are currently planned to be converted to SSGNs (Guided Missile Submarines) as platform for the UGM-109 Tomahawk SLCM. In any case, it is expected that the UGM-96A Trident I C-4 missile will be out of the operational inventory by 2005.

Lockheed-Martin UGM-133 Trident II

The UGM-133 Trident II D-5 is the ultimate SLBM (Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile) of the U.S. Navy. Attributed with very long range, a high-precision guidance system, and a MIRV (Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle) warhead, it is probably the most important part of the current nuclear arsenal of the United States.

When the U.S. Navy and Lockheed studied the possibility of an ULMS (Undersea Long-Range Missile System) in the early 1970s, it was decided to develop an improved UGM-73 Poseidon C-3 missile first (this evolved into the UGM-96 Trident I C-4), to be followed later by a much enlarged missile to be deployed on a new class of strategic missile submarines. The first ship of this new SLBM class, the USS Ohio (SSBN-726), was commissioned in November 1981. This ship, as well as the next seven Ohio class SSBNs, was fitted with Trident I missiles, but Lockheed had already begun design of the new D-5 SLBM to make full use of the Ohio's large missile tubes. The formal development contract for the new missile, by then called Trident II, was issued in October 1983. The missile designation UGM-133A was assigned in early 1986, and it's possible that an interim designation of UGM-96B was used before that date. The first Trident II launch occurred in January 1987, and the first submarine launch was attempted by USS Tennessee (SSBN-734, the first D-5 ship of the Ohio class) in March 1989. The latter failed because of problems with the first stage engine nozzle, and these problems delayed the IOC (Initial Operational Capability) of the Trident II until March 1990.

The UGM-133A Trident II D-5 SLBM is a significantly enlarged development of the UGM-96 Trident I C-4. It employs many of the advanced design features of the latter (including the extendable aero-spike, light-weight motor casings, and high-density fuel), and the larger size leads to an increased range of up zo 11100 km (6000 nm). This range enables the Trident II to reach almost every strategic target in the Northern hemisphere when launched from SSBNs sitting in U.S. ports. The MK 6 stellar/inertial navigation system is able to receive GPS (Global Positioning System) updates, thereby increasing accuracy to that of a land-based ICBM, about 90 m (300 ft) CEP (compared to 380 m (1250 ft) for the C-4). The warhead section consists of eight (or 14 in a maximum payload shorter-range configuration) MK 5 independent reentry vehicles, each one carrying a 475 kT W-88 thermonuclear warhead.

The ten newest SSBNs of the 18 Ohio class ships are currently operational with the Trident II D-5, each SSBN having 24 missile tubes. Of the eight older submarines equipped with Trident I C-4, four are currently planned for conversion to the D-5. With the conversion of the LGM-30G Minuteman III ICBMs to single-RV warheads, and the pending retirement of the LGM-118 Peacekeeper, the Trident II will soon be the only MIRVed strategic missile in the US nuclear inventory, and therefore become the most important deterrance weapon. Production of the UGM-133A is continuing, and more than 500 missiles have been built so far.
