NAME: Craig A. Puz (MBA, MSO) Payload Specialist

BIRTHPLACE AND DATE: Pasadena, CA, 24 Jun 1954.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Brown hair and eyes; height: 6' 2"; weight: 195 lbs.

EDUCATION: Graduated from Edgewood High School, West Covina, CA in 1972. Earned a Bachelor of Science specializing in chemistry and management from the USAF Academy in 1976, a Master of Science in Business Administration and Management from the University of Wyoming in 1980, and a Master of Science in Space Operations from the Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, OH, in 1982. Also completed Air Force Air Command and Staff College in 1984, Squadron Officer School in 1980 (Distinguished Graduate), and is Level II certified in the Air Force Acquisition Management Career Development Program.

MARITAL STATUS: Married, Jill.

EXPERIENCE: Served three years as a Minuteman III ICBM Missile Combat Crew Commander, instructor, and deputy at F. E. Warren AFB, Cheyenne, WY; Alternate Command Post qualified, capable of assuming command of the 200-missile Wing in an emergency. One year experience as an Emergency War Order instructor, teaching the procedures used to launch ICBMs, and a Positive Control Code Custodian. Seven years engineering/program management experience in three different system program offices - Talon Gold, Teal Ruby, and STARLAB, all studying different aspects of the acquisition, tracking, and pointing (ATP) problem for space-based weapons. On STARLAB, fulfilled two different functions as a payload specialist and division chief overseeing 30 military and contractor personnel and $40 million in contract resources. Directed development of two remote calibration sites, environmental assessments, STARBIRD target booster scoreboards, mission training, crew procedures, mission data analysis, and secondary payloads. As a Lieutenant Colonel and Chief, Tactical Intelligence and Related Activities (TIARA) section, HQ USAF, Pentagon, Washington DC, was the focal point for over 50 TIARA programs, including TENCAP, funded at over $3 billion per year. Also prepared the Air Force Director of Forces (AF/XOF) for TIARA congressional testimony to intelligence, authorization, and appropriation committees and staffs.

NASA EXPERIENCE: Selected to operate the complex STARLAB ATP experiment aboard the Space Shuttle and received NASA-specific payload specialist training. Interfaced with NASA astronaut crew, NASA centers, experiment developers, and contractors as on-orbit expert for experiment hardware and software. Participated in RC-135 Zero Gravity Aircraft flights to refine Starlab hardware and procedures as well as Neutral Buoyancy Simulator (MSFC), Weightless Environment Training Facility (JSC) payload development simulations, and Rockwell International Shuttle simulations. Trained on the Manned Maneuvering Unit simulator at the Lockheed/Martin training facility outside Denver, CO, and the Remote Manipulator System/Satellite Servicing Simulator at the Grumman Aerospace facility, Bethpage, NY. Volunteered as a participant in the 8-psi spacesuit study at Brook AFB, TX and participated in development of the AX-5 hard spacesuit at Ames Research Center, Sunnyvale, CA.
