Murray was born in Cresson, Pennsylvania. He joined the United States Army in 1939, and served in the Cavalry. He volunteered for pilot training in 1941 and flew combat missions in North Africa as a P-40 pilot. This was followed by service as a P-47 instructor, and then as maintenance flight test pilot at Chanute Air Force Base. This was followed by training at the Flight Test School at Wright Field. He bacame the first test pilot stationed at Muroc Airfield. Murray flew many experimental and production aircraft types, including the XP-59, P-80, P-51, P-82, F-84, B-25, B-43, B-45 and several X-planes: the X-1A and X-1B, X-4, X-5. After service at Muroc/Edwards from 1949 to 1955, was sent to Paris, France. There he flew the Fiat G-91, the Mystere, and the Javelin.

Serving at the Systems Project Office at Wright from 1958–1960, he was Air Force manager for the X-15 program, He retired to work at Boeing from 1960-1969, managing crew integration for the X-20 and Apollo programs. After two years at Bell Helicopter on their tilt rotor program, Murray retired in 1971.
